Jewish Family Services Committee
JCCSLO is working to establish a Jewish Family Services for SLO County. More details on its mission and programs to follow. Here is who is involved today:
Marsha Epstein: Marsha serves on the Area Agency for the Aging. Marsha is retired from Cal Poly, and serves as President of Central Coast Hadassah. She also is on the JCCSLO Board as our South County Liaison, and is an active member at Temple Beth El in Santa Maria. Additionally, Marsha serves on the Board for the Anti-Defamation League of San Luis Obispo and lives in Nipomo.
Mimi Nash: After retiring from Cuesta College four years ago, Mimi joined Congregation Ohr Tzafon in Atascadero and for the past year has served on COT's Board of Trustees. A Marriage and Family Counselor by training, Mimi's work at Cuesta involved assisting welfare-to-work students enroll and complete classes, leading ot job skills and self-sustaining employment. The job required close collaboration with SLO County Department of Social Services on the students' behalf, as well as a thorough knowledge of the resources available to them within the college community. An active grandmother of 5 grandkids in the Bay Area, Mimi lives with husband, Chris Toews, in North County.
Binah Polay: Binah is the Executive Director for the Community Counseling Center in San Luis Obispo. Binah serves on the Board for Temple Ner Shalom and runs its ritual services. Binah lives in Los Osos.
Gila Pomerantz: Fifteen years ago, Gila started a Jewish Family Services in Fresno, CA. Gila is a social worker in Fresno and continues to work in its Jewish community and area organizations. Gila lives in Fresno part-time and in Shell Beach part-time.
Susan Shalit: Susan is a retired social worker and business consultant from Orange County. Susan is on the JCCSLO Board and co-chair of its Program Committee. Susan is also on the Temple Ner Shalom Board, and active in the opera and classical music scene in San Luis Obispo.
Jared Sharon: Jared first retired after 35 years in the California Community College System; 13 years as a Chemistry Professor, and 22 years as Dean and VP for Academic Affairs. After that, he received special training at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati to become a Para-Rabbinic. He has served as the Para-Rabbinic of Congregation Beth David for 10 years. Jared has also come out of retirement to be the Jewish Chaplian at the California Substance Abuse and Treatment Facility and State Prison, and volunteers with Rabbi Lon Moskowitz at the California Men's Colony. Jared's son lives in Israel and is the Head Coach of the Tel Aviv-Joffa Sabres, an Israeli Football League. Their team is made of 40 Jews, 1 Filipino Catholic, 1 American Christian, and 7 Israeli Arabs. Their motto: One team, one goal!
Sue Taylor: Sue is a retired social worker and practiced in Southern California. Sue serves on the Central Coast Hadassah Board as its Education Chair. She lives in Los Osos.
Sam Taylor: Sam is retired from University of Southern California where he focused on nonprofit administration and community development/organization. Sam lives in Los Osos.
