Holidays with JCCSLO We like them all, but we host events for these ones in particular:
Tu B'shvat January 10, 2010 was the first JCCSLO Tu B'shvat celebration of planting trees, and we look to continue the tradition in the years to come. The planting of trees happened as a part of our Bridge and Community Garden project with a Cal Poly team. Engineering students are working on the bridge, a Landscape Architect student is designing the garden, and an Architectural Enginerring student is constructing the overall aesthetic of the project. That Sunday the community was invited to join in on the project by planting trees for the community garden. Over 40 people showed to plant around 70 trees! A generous donation of native and fruit trees by Lionel and Chris Johnston made this possible.
Our 2011 Tu B'shvat was combined with a Kehilla party at the Storms!
Yom HaShoah Each year, JCCSLO invites a Holocaust survivor to come speak to the community. Over 300-400 people show up - there often isn't enough room for everyone! Find out details about this year's presentation.
Yom HaAtzmaut JCCSLO hosts an Israeli celebration party each year with Israeli food, wine, and music. Read about this year's party!
Hannukah 2009 marked the first year of JCCSLO coordinating the lighting of the public menorah at Mission Plaza. This is an inter-congregational event, as well as an interfaith cooperation between the Jewish community and the Old Mission. Each night the Mission rings the bell to denote which night of Hannukah it is, and the menorah was originally designed by its former leader, Fr. Jim Nisbett. 2010 began a tradition of hosting a Hannukah party following the candle-lighting at the Mission, thanks to Mission members, Dan and Liz Krieger.
