Camp Shoreshim is a nature-based Jewish summer camp located on a stunning 10-acre ranch campus in San Luis Obispo, California—a beloved destination known for its mild weather and natural beauty.

Our campus features olive trees, creek beds, along with a canvas tent, gaga pit, tennis court, and expansive open land for exploration, creativity, and play. Camp Shoreshim offers an immersive outdoor experience rooted in Jewish values, environmental stewardship, and joyful community.

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an innovative and hands-on Camp Director to lead Camp Shoreshim for a 1–2 week summer camp session, with additional included hours before and after camp. This role includes advance planning and preparation, on-site camp leadership, and post-camp wrap-up. The final scope, timeline, and number of hours will be shaped by the director’s experience and vision, with the goal of delivering a meaningful, well-run, and financially sustainable camp program.

The Camp Director reports to JCC-Federation leadership and works collaboratively with staff, families, and community partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES may include but will not be limited to:
  • Program Planning & Vision
    • Design and implement a camp curriculum integrating Jewish culture, nature-based learning, outdoor adventure, and community-building
    • Infuse Jewish values and traditions into daily camp life in an accessible and joyful way
    • Develop partnerships with outside educators or experience providers, as appropriate
  • Pre-Camp Preparation
    • Assist with camp setup and preparation of grounds and program spaces
    • Support enrollment readiness, including answering parent questions prior to the session
    • Help coordinate supplies, materials, and program logistics
  • Staff Leadership
    • Recruit, train, supervise, and inspire a team of teenage camp staff
    • Foster a positive, professional, and supportive staff culture
  • Camp Operations
    • Oversee day-to-day camp operations for campers ages 5–12
    • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging camp environment
    • Serve as a primary on-site leader during the camp session
    • Address 
  • Post-Camp Wrap-Up
    • Facilitate camp breakdown and site cleanup following the session
    • Provide a post-camp report reflecting on outcomes, budget considerations, and recommendations for future seasons

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience in camp leadership, outdoor education, or youth programming
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to motivate and manage a diverse team
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture and traditions, with enthusiasm for land-based and outdoor experiences
  • Creative, flexible, and solutions-oriented approach
  • Musical ability a plus, but not required
  • Ability to be on-site in San Luis Obispo for training, camp operations, and wrap-up

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to jog across uneven outdoor terrain

COMPENSATION
