The Concept: The Ranch is a new endeavor for United Cerebral Palsy, dedicated to achieving
better physical, emotional, and spiritual health for everyone that gets
involved and attends its activities. Its proposed central location is the JCCSLO’s
bucolic ten-acre property at 875 Laureate in San Luis Obispo.
The Ranch will be operated as a day program to
accommodate not only the special needs population, but the general public as
well. A variety of agricultural opportunities, a range of open-air activities,
and a place to teach participants fundamental job skills will be available. The produce
and products grown and raised at The
Ranch will be available for the general public to purchase fresh, locally
In general, there is a lack of programming available
to the adult special needs population.
Existing programs that last only a few hours during the day leave too
many hours spent in front of a television or computer. These activities are solitary and
sedentary, and are known to diminish physical and emotional health. Instead,
The Ranch will
allow for the special needs population to get outdoors, meet new people and
make friends, socialize with one another and the general public, and learn
JCCSLO is particularly enthusiastic about being
in these talks, as The Ranch will use our
otherwise very underutilized land, and with an underserved population. Further, projects such as construction
of a bridge leading to a community spiritual garden and cultivating the land
will help us achieve the goals of “Tikkun Olam”, a Jewish concept meaning to
repair the world, as diverse parts of the San Luis Obispo County community come
together to enjoy the fruits of our beautiful land.
